Netflix officially ended its DVD rental service with final shipments sent on Sept. 29, 2023, the streaming giant announced. The rental service started in 1998 and ran for 25 years.
Rural areas without reliable internet were likely a big reason. Lots of rural areas basically only have satellite internet. And that’s historically pretty slow and prone to dropouts when it’s cloudy. Starlink improved that for many, but it’s still not as stable as a hard line.
