    That’s compacted soil pellets, not solid stone, right? I can see the strings/root penetrating each clump.

    Build a railroad on it.

      Yeah that’s right.

      Compacted implies anthropogenic compaction to a soil scientist though. These are soil aggregates with structure, and are naturally forming through pedogenic processes.

      Structure occurs primarily through the shrink-swell of clay as it wets and dries or through freeze-thaw cycles.
