Hi, why can I only see some communities on other servers?
For example, https://aussie.zone/c/[email protected] works but https://aussie.zone/c/[email protected] doesn’t work (“404: couldnt_find_community”).
I’m a Lemmy noob, sorry if I’m missing something obvious.
EDIT: The missing communities are also not visible via Community Search with All selected.
Viewing communities from other instances is a bit… unintuitive currently in Lemmy. For a remote community to be accessible, someone first needs to search for it.
Either as the full URL:
https://midwest.social/c/cats
or the search string:
!cats@midwest.social
I’ve just searched for that community by URL now, and it is showing for me on aussie.zone:
Another thing to note, is that posts/comments are only synced once someone has subscribed. So you won’t see most older content. You can “pull” it to aussie zone by searching for full post/comment by URL.
Ahhh gotchya, thanks heaps!
EDIT: It is a bit janky, especially since “pulling” (searching by URL or channel ID) doesn’t actually give any results and you have to plain text search for the channel again afterwards. I’m not complaining though, mainly noting this quirk here in case someone in future is searching for help on this issue too.
Can I also “pull” a Mastodon post? I tried searching for “https://theblower.au/@frogglin/110574152545919715” and then searching for the keywords “100 brooch backs” or “frogglin” or even “theblower” but nothing came up.
EDIT: Please ignore this question, it seems this isn’t implemented yet: https://lemmy.eus/post/169573
Yeah I’ve not had much luck with federated access to much of anything except for lemmy/kbin.
Is this also how an instance’s ‘All’ page is populated (only by posts from communities that members have visited or subscribed to)?
Only by communities someone else has already searched for. Though if nobody is subscribed, they won’t receive new posts/comments from the home instance.
