'Third party' vote looks set to beat Coalition

Labor took the glory, but beneath the surface of the election result an ongoing trend holds a warning for both major parties.

In short, independents and minor parties combined got more vote than a major party (the LNP coalition). I think this is actually great news, it shows how well ranked choice and proportional voting work to empower smaller parties and diversify them.

    I always love ABC’s interactive visualisations. They’re usually well-made, and usually aren’t just tacked on jiggling keys.

      Thanks a lot for sharing the links, fascinating. I have admired ABC visual storytelling as well. Do you know by any chance which software do they use to create the visuals? Would love replicate in the presentation.

        You’ve made me curious, I only had a quick surface-level look but it looks like they’re using these custom-made React JavaScript tools: https://github.com/abcnews

        Unfortunately:

        Odyssey [this seems like the main base tool] is quite tightly coupled to ABC News environments and as such is generally unsuitable for use as a framework or library in other projects. However it’s published here in the hope others might be able to learn from the techniques used or pull out small parts for use in their own projects.
