This is incredibly frustrating. It’s been a decade now since the State Government completed their part of the deal. And the LNP administration of Brisbane City Council has repeatedly stalled and cancelled and gone back to the drawing board; anything to avoid actually delivering this bikeway.

But perhaps equally as frustrating, if only because it comes from where you wouldn’t expect, is how negative cycling advocates have been towards this. The have been so focused on the route along Dickson St and then towards Jackson St, they’ve now decided to start opposing alternative routes. They’ve been sharing things like this:

to show how the new proposed route is so much worse than the old proposed route. But that presupposes you want to go to that specific end point. Or that you want to continue along to the east, which leads towards the airport and Nudgee, and is the safest (albeit not the most direct) route to get out towards Sandgate and Redcliffe. But I counter with this:

    and this:

which shows that if your goal is to go north towards Kedron, Chermside, or Aspley, the Price St/Kent Rd option is the significantly shorter one.

If our council cared about good infrastructure, they would deliver both of these. Because both are necessary to give all cyclists a high quality, reasonably direct route to their destinations. But if you had to have only one, my opinion is that the Kent Rd option is the superior one. Chermside is just a much denser area than Nudgee. It serves far more people.
