That comment reads to me more like criticism of the original Alita than genuine desire for a sequel. It’s saying “this film was all setup, no payoff”.

Yeah they wrote it as a trilogy, with a big ass cliffhanger. They had Edward Norton as the overarching villain, as the other poster mentioned, but didn’t even utilize him. The plot was meant to follow the manga, so people at least had some idea of what was to come.

Was that movie supposed to ever have a sequel? I have no idea what the point of edward nortan’s ambiguous villain character even was? Was there a sequel planned and then they canned it? Overall the movie jjust made zero sense.

Yes, it was supposed to have a sequel. It was the start of a franchise that never became one. The OP of the OP is not wrong in saying it was a setup and wanted a sequel. The difference of this movie versus the slop of other sequels is this one was made to be one. It wasn’t based on some one-off movie that did well, so the studio demanded a followup to milk it for more money. From its inception this movie was supposed to have one.

Oh, that’s interesting. I had thought the OOP (N.B., that’s short for “original OP” and is a fair bit shorter & clearer than “the OP of the OP”) was criticising the movie for doing a poor job of paying off its plot. But actually perhaps it was more of a genuine wish than I thought?

Imagine if the original Star Wars movie ends right before they send out the X-Wings to attack the Death Star. That’s sort of how Alita felt. It’s been a while and I only saw it once, but basically she is trying to get to this “upper city” area to compete in some sort of battle race thing. It ends as soon as she gets up there basically.

I never saw it myself. I was just interpreting the comment from the OOP.
