I once came across a large adult wombat just chilling in the middle of a single lane road in a national park. Wikipedia says they grow up to 35kg, but I swear this one was pushing 50kg; like a large bulldog crossed with a pig. One absolutely rotund stocky fur-ball. The chase continued for a solid 100 meters before he opened up and just took off like a rocket, accelerating into the shadows before darting sideways into the bushes. I was blown away. You’re missing the #1 reason organized criminals prefer their own service. To have trusted staff who control everything — the servers, code development & deployment — whom can’t be ordered by a court to shut off access to individuals at any time, or provide metadata, eavesdrop, etc.
The weakest link with legal services like Signal is that they can be compelled by law enforcement, the judicial system, and government… That’s an enormous risk for any organized crime operation. Even a minimal amount of metadata collection can do a lot of damage, especially if it’s analyzed over months/years, and especially when performed by an advanced persistent threat actor like a nation state.
It’s almost like western democracy is a charade and we’re all living in corporate plutocracies dominated by the wealthiest multinationals and individuals.

Based on nothing but wikipedia the primary methods for desalination are distillation (boiling) and membrane; neither of which sound like ramp up time would matter.

I’d rather not defend banks, but it appears the fee only applies when staff are involved. Withdrawing at an ATM or EFTPOS at checkout seem to remain free.
They should be legally required to provide free assisted withdrawals for seniors, the disabled, and post office withdrawals when an ATM is not within a few km’s, but I don’t think it’d be an issue for everyone else.
Personally I don’t care about this, however I think most bank fees should be illegal, period; especially insufficient balance and all generic monthly fees. Nowadays most of these things are fully-automated, and I’d bet the cost of maintaining an inactive or low activity account are near-zero; the fees are just a tax on the poor, financially illiterate, and busy.
