I know it sounds dumb that the butter chicken kit contains neither butter nor chicken but trust me, they’re awesome.
I get the PB and J (just add peanut butter and jelly) kit from the farmer’s market. It’s a loaf of bread
I actually made up the label to read:
DIY BUTTER CHICKEN KIT (just add butter and chicken)
because I think it’s hysterical.
I’ve made butter chicken once before. It was delicious, but it was a pain. Getting the spices and the process was a lot to go through if you’re not making a large batch. All that to say, this is a good idea and I would have definitely bought it if I saw it at my farmers market.
Thanks. It includes organic diced tomatoes, organic coconut milk, and two spice packs, one that goes in at the beginning and one that goes in at the end. So you literally just add the chicken and the butter at the end and you have butter chicken. The tag line on our ready or DIY meals is “EAT LIKE A FOODIE FARMER” because we eat the things we sell. Butter chicken is one of my favorites. When my wife and kids were away for three weeks in July I made butter chicken. I made two batches of spices and vacuum sealed one. When they came home my wife wanted to make butter chicken but was very tired so I said, “I have great news for you!” She told me to make up a few packs for her. That’s where this idea was born.
Coconut milk? Is this to replace yoghurt and cashew nut paste?
I would buy that though, if I saw it where i am. My kitchen is low storage/space and already filled with Euro/East Asian stuff to fit everything for West Asian foods too.
Coconut milk? Is this to replace yoghurt and cashew nut paste?
Yes. Our son if deathly allergic to cashews. I love them but we can’t have them in the house.
Beyond the irony of the name, this is genuinely an excellent idea and I wish you luck selling them! Are you considering making these for any other recipes?
We are. We have sold frozen ready meals in the past. This is a new idea. If I can come up with recipes where we can supply everything but the perishables we will likely try them. I make an amazing Thai green curry but my paste is frozen so that won’t work.
Perhaps try dehydrating the paste into a powder? Don’t know how much flavor charge you’d get, as that’d probably volatilize some aromatics, but could be worth a trial run.
I think you would lose a lot of the flavour. Maybe freeze drying would work better. It’s worth giving both a try.

NO BEANS!
I love beans, but not in butter chicken. It’s awesome with fresh peas, though.

Mmmm…I love beans. Maybe DIY Chili Kits in the fall.
What are the contents?
A can of organic diced tomatoes, a can of organic coconut milk, and two spice packets, one that goes in at the beginning and one that goes in at the end plus a set of instructions that tell you on one side how to cook it in an Instant Pot and on the other how to cook it on the stove top. It’s everything you need except the perishables.
Canned rice
Yeah, tell us more!
I wonder when/if these will show up in MY farmers market. Looks like a great idea, I hope you sell them profitably.
Thanks! Maybe we’ll be at your farmer’s market tomorrow and you’ll be surprised and buy one!
I’m a sucker for butter chicken but it’s such a pain to make at home. I need this stuff fr
My wife was very happy with the packet that I made up the last time I made butter chicken. She bought large quantities of the spices I needed at Costco this afternoon and I made up 10 kits.
