It may not be on the news radar in the English-speaking world, but the turbulence sweeping parts of Africa is the biggest challenge to French influence on the continent in 60 years.

Civilian governments backed by Paris have been toppled in military coups and Russia has wasted little time in taking advantage. The Wagner group was infamous for doing Russia’s bidding across Africa, but now a new organisation loyal to Vladimir Putin is infiltrating the region’s coup belt.

ABC News Australia - Norman Hermant reports.

It’s no coincidence the Kremlin was ready to take advantage of the coups toppling civilian governments, they were very likely behind them.

Someone else has downvoted, but I’m going to at least ask: are you implying that the US military-industrial complex is somehow behind Russian involvement in Africa?

        Several someones, apparantly.

No, I was implying that it gives certain interest groups in the US a handy argument for new business opportunities.

My comment was not about the whys, wherefores, or morality of the events being reported on; just a cynical evaluation about how certain industries in the US might start lobbying in response.

Ahh … Ok. You’re suggesting that this piece of news is being played up right now because someone invested in the US military-industrial complex is seeing the stage for US military involvement in Africa. That’s plausible.
