I just swapped out the Wi-Fi card in my 11-year-old Lenovo S210 Touch laptop with a Coral TPU mPCIe card—and it works!

I’ve been using this old laptop for years as a Plex media server and SAMBA Network Storage, but now it’s running Frigate for real-time AI-powered object detection. I’m thrilled to see how well it handles everything, with inference speeds under 10ms which was at 150-250ms with its internal Pentium 4 (2nd generation) dual-core CPU.

Using it for real-time detection and home automation via Home Assistant MQTT!

If you’ve got an old laptop lying around, you can definitely repurpose it for AI tasks like this! The whole process was surprisingly smooth, and now I’ve got a powerful AI-based NVR for home security.
