More discs are on the way this week as well, so be sure to watch for them.
It’s a slow morning for release news, but we do have a couple things for you.
First, Paramount has set ZAZ: The Collection! for release on 4K Ultra HD on 11/19. That’s Zucker, Abrahams & Zucker to you! The collection will include Airplane! (1980), Top Secret! (1984), and The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! (1988). The first two are new to the format.
…
Here’s something exciting: Decal and Neon are going to be releasing Pablo Berger’s animated Robot Dreams (2023) on Blu-ray on 10/8! I haven’t seen this yet, but a few friends have and they have great things to say about it.
…
And in other news, Synapse Films will release Mike Mendez’s The Convent (2000) in 4K on 10/8.
A24 and Lionsgate will release Ty West’s MaXXXine on Blu-ray and 4K UHD on 10/8.
And Well Go USA will release Jang Jae-hyun’s Exhuma (2024) on 4K and Blu-ray on 10/8 as well.
I am just excited about airplane. I have been waiting out in so many comedy for 4k release. But maybe I will just do the bluray depending on cost. CAD prices ain’t cheap.
That ZAZ Collection looks great but a I am wondering about holding out for separate Airplane and Naked Gun boxsets with a solo Top Secret. This comes so quickly on the heels of the Top Secret Blu-ray that I wonder if Paramount are milking their back catalogue and those sets won’t be far off.
Gotta’ machine gun them out before people realize they can make their own 4K version at home now ;-)
You can do hd with obs studio but 4k?
Not to mention that streamed 4k is garbage.
I just meant someone could uprez an old 1080p transfer themselves ;-) Hopefully there’s a bit more going on with these releases, extra pixels aren’t everything… but I’m one of the folks that believes it should be a new scan, not just some fancy uprezing algorithm.
My parents always warned me that sitting to close to the TV would rot my brain :-)
4k releases aren’t up-resolutioned 1080p. They are new transfers from the film print. That’s the entire point of 4k Blu-ray releases!
Yeah… not always. Especially older stuff that would need to be rescanned from film.
You are right. There’s even a website that lists them:
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I went looking for… well there was another site that listed them but it seems to be shut down now, so thanks for posting that.
I also ran across and article that mentioned IMDB having a page for every movie that had details on its original shooting format e.g. 2K digital/35mm/sony handycam (looking at you Blare Witch Project)… but I think that’s gone subscription only? Not sure, maybe just gone.
Airplane! In 4k? Surely you can’t be serious?
I am, but don’t call me Shirley.
Orca!? I was just thinking of that movie yesterday. I loved it as a kid. Can’t wait to get it.
Having rewatched Airplane! recently, I firmly believe that it is an auteur piece of filmmaking, a true lightning-in-a-bottle artistic vision that could not sustain itself after this without turning formulaic and losing freshness. You cannot go any higher than this, only sideways.
