Explanation: Before the Emperor Constantine, Roman Emperors had a largely ambivalent attitude towards Christians and Christianity. Some Emperors, like Antoninus Pius and Phillip the Arab, were well-disposed towards Christianity - but even then, only marginally. Christianity, for most Emperors and most of the Empire, was a fringe phenomenon that was worthy of only occasional attention - and very little attempt to understand the strange new sect of monotheists.
