Got a cold call for a job that’s a lot like what I used to do so I’m 95% sure I don’t want it, but I’ve got dragged into a chat with the director on Monday anyway despite telling the recruiter it’s probably not for me??

Am bored/curious so I’ll go, although I don’t like wasting people’s time… but geez the recruiter was persistent. I’m sure he must be getting a cut for any interview he scores even though the chance of converting it into a hire is low

Never feel bad about wasting a company’s time when it comes to hiring. Everyone gets jerked around in the hiring process, it’s good to give it back to them now and then

Very fair point. That makes me feel better about going in out of sheer curiosity and to work out where I fit in in the industry and maybe make a couple connections. It has been a long road towards not taking these evaluations too personally (whether positive or negative) or feel like I need to be selling myself at all times. And it’s a small industry, so it’s easy to feel over-conscious about what people think, but I’m sure I can still maintain a decent enough profile with a gracious “thanks but no thanks” at the end of the interview.

They don’t get a cut for the interview, but they do if you are hired and it’s a lot. Something like 5-10% of your salary. If they fill a $100k position, they get something like $10k. Or, their employer does. Which is why you see so many recruiters self-employed.

I figured it should be for hires, not just finding candidates and getting interviews. Guy must be a bit of a rookie if he thinks I’d seriously convert into a hire but I guess it’s a tight market in that specific sector.
